The oldest optical company in American history, AO has pioneered eyewear innovation for nearly two centuries. Its founders believed everyone should have access to quality eyewear, not just the elite, and they changed history by bringing spectacle manufacturing to the United States.
Since then, AO has created iconic sunwear styles worn by pilots, Presidents, and NASA space crews. Buzz Aldrin wore American Optical Original Pilot sunglasses on the lunar surface during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission—making them the first sunglasses ever worn on the Moon.
